About the book
Two children thrown together on a residential week in Wickworth Manor find a mystery at the heart of the handsome stately home that provides a gripping diversion! Bouncy Paige and the reserved Curtis make an unlikely pair but their determination to solve the puzzle and uncover the story of the family’s link with slavery that lies behind the hidden portrait turns them into eager sleuthing partners – and firm friends. Exciting and with lots of action, it also gives some background on the slave trade.
Frome Valley book group: some us found this book boring at the start but now we are all enjoying it and don’t want to put the book down!
We really like: the description of the characters; the telling of real things, slavery, in a story; the excitement of the children being caught out investigating the mystery.
I enjoyed the book because it was a great mystery about a portrait of the Wickworth boy, who lost his true love and now haunts the manor. The two main characters are really mean to each other at first but then make friends to solve the mystery. That was my favourite part. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy solving mysteries before the truth is revealed.
We are now getting closer to solving the mystery. We think there is a dungeon underneath the Wickworth Manor! It is getting really creepy especially with the ‘death mask’!
I think this is a very good book with lots of adventure. It’s a bit like scooby doo and I can’t wait to read on and read about Curtis and Paige solving their mystery of wick worth manor, it’s getting a bit creepy with the scary painting.
cool, have you read the hole book yet?
what page are you on? same, the ghost bit creeps me out because I was in my room and I am scared of the dark ( silly me) and it was dark and I got really scared
We would like to recommend the book to others. We won’t spoil the ending for you but it was very dramatic!! If there was a sequel; mystery number 2, we would definitely read it!

hi, I really liked this book, I would rate it 10 / 10
This book is AWSOME! I want to read different books by the same author of this one!
The mystery is starting to unravel now and is becoming really interesting.
We spoke about which character we identified best with. Paige because she’s adventurous like us. Curtis because he likes to solve problems on his own.
